His Excellency Allieu I. Kanu
Diplomatic relations between Sierra Leone and The Bahamas came about as a result of the ceremony to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade in 2006. Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone was the city where most Caribbean freed slaves returned to so there is an obvious strong cultural link between The Bahamas and Sierra Leone.
During the ceremony to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, The Old Society Hall Project was launched. The Old Society Hall is a building located in the community of Fox Hill in Nassau, New Providence. The Karathanassis Foundation initiated and funded the restoration of the hall as a gift from the people of Sierra Leone to the citizens of The Bahamas. The project was officially opened by His Excellency Allieu I. Kanu, Ambassador & Deputy Permanent Representative, Mission of The Republic of Sierra Leone to the United Nations and Minister of Foreign Affairs of The Bahamas, The Hon. Fredrick Mitchell, MP.
